Open Source and the Channel

October 30, 2007 - Why Embedded Linux Devices? (Tom Adelstein). Digital convergence is here. We're right in the middle of it;we're pushed by the Digital Phone revolution, the move from analog music devices to iPOds and MP3 players. So, how will you take advantage of the opportunities available as the world turns digital?

October 16, 2007 - Open Source: No Longer the Provence of a Few (Tom Adelstein). As recently as five years ago, Linux and FreeBSD developers stood alone starring at the world of Open Source. In the adoption model, they were the innovators. Early adopters stood on the sidelines waiting to see if Open Source would work and/or take off. Jumping into the fray seemed risky.

October 16, 2007 - Open Source: Who Does it Serve? Another View (TxtEdMacs). OSS may seem to be absent at a client's site. Moreover, that is what you are told. Nonetheless, it simply may not be true. Furthermore, you were not the victim of a disembling liar. Keep your own eyes and ears open for opportunities. Yes even make your skill set known, despite the apparent lack of demand.

October 10, 2007 - Open Source: Who Does it Serve? (Tom Adelstein). If you have not heard the skepticism about Open Source these days then you haven't been listening. Many Boards of Directors have spent enough time with IBM that they've pushed Open Source in the direction of the corporate CIO. Corporate IT management has kicked back as hard at the Board as they did the techies in the data center. Let's take a look at this skepticism.

October 02, 2007 - Finding a Development Tool for Contemporary Business (Tom Adelstein). One of the best environments I found while researching collaborative environments is SharpForge. http://sharpforge.org/.

September 13, 2007 - Dissecting the methodology used to produce most Open Source software (Tom Adelstein). Open Source Software has moved up the software stack rapidly in the last three to five years. Many organizations have adopted it not because it's free but because it solves problems. The problems Open Source developers encountered two decades ago included collaboration amongst geographically diverse team members, language differences, quality control, security and virtual administration.

September 05, 2007 - Why Employ an Open Source Strategy? (Tom Adelstein). Today, Open Source is a market force and it has relentlessly moved up the software stack. You or your clients should know if you want to join the band wagon because Open Source is the methodology de jour or if you have the makings for successful use.

August 28, 2007 - What is Open Source Really? (Tom Adelstein). To many observers the term Open Source means any free program whose source code is made available for use or modification. Some think of Open Source software as shareware only with the source code available. But is that all there is?

How To: Hardware Problems

October 30, 2007 - Monitor Color Mis-Matching (H. Cohen). The color you see on your web page development machine may not be what your readers see. Indeed, with two side by side monitors connected to the same card the colors differ markedly. Moreover, that is only half the problem.

October 10, 2007 - Dual Monitor Configuration on Ubuntu Linux (H. Cohen). Having dual monitors is more than a convience, even with Linux's four independent sessions seeing the execution adjacent to the code is priceless.

How To: Coding Web Pages
html & css files by Hand

October 16, 2007 - Simple Internal Bookmarking of Footnotes Using the Anchor Tag (H. Cohen). A few simple rules for naming footnote anchor sites/targets and their associated internal links decreases the coding load. Here is how I now do it. Another in the series 'How To: Coding HTML & CSS Files by Hand'.

September 25, 2007 - Regaining Control of Subversion-II (H. Cohen). The previous week we introduced a new Product News Section that forced a several changes into the productiion cascading style sheet. Normally, this might not be a problem, however, there is already another css file under test that is now out of sync with the production. The aforementioned and other problems made it necessary to commit the next version with extra care.

September 12, 2007 - Committing a Source Control Version (H. Cohen). We have arrived at the state where a new version is required. First we must be assured a commit will yield a full version. This means first determining the current status. Sometimes we need to run a revert followed by another addition. Once ready, we do our commit.

Energy & Engineering

October 23, 2007 - Why Flying Wind Generators Are Not the Answer (TxtEdMacs). I am somewhat taken with the concept of wind electrical generators mounted on airfoils, I rebel at the concept that this is the answer to the U.S.'s electrical energy problems. I doubt its sustainablility and I fear many predicable ill effects are either ignored or glossed over. As part of a mix, it may have an important role, however, until the risks are analyzed it is premature to call this a winner. Another in the series 'Letters to C.E.O.s'.

September 25, 2007 - North Africa's Tunisia - Europe's Answer to the Climate Dilemma? (TxtEdMacs). Tunisia is well situated by geography to constructively interact with the European Union. The questions are: 1.) do they have any interest in doing so and 2.) if they do, do they have the socialital cohesiveness to see co-operation as a benefit? In my view, large scale European efforts could be a disaster for all sides. Another in the series 'Letters to C.E.O.s'.

August 28, 2007 - North Africa's Morocco - Europe's Answer to the Climate Dilemma? (TxtEdMacs). Morocco seems to be a perfect fit, by geography, interaction with the EU and population of Moroccan descent in EU states. Moreover, they probably have the needed skills and certainly could use the economic boost. But it may not be that simple. Another in the series 'Letters to C.E.O.s'.

August 21, 2007 - North Africa - Europe's Answer to the Climate Dilemma? (TxtEdMacs). An introduction to a new series about a potential alliance of some Noth African states with the EU to combat excess carbon dioxide emissions that affect climate. Another in the series 'Letters to C.E.O.s'.

August 14, 2007 - Plug-in Hybrids and Open Source (TxtEdMacs). Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles [PHEV] are in demand by individuals, small organization, small businesses and now larger corporate entities. Both GM and Toyota seem to promise an earlier appearance of such a vehicle, though each has back tracked previously. The pressures have increased, so their risk is higher. Despite this they may be beaten by others. A series 'Letters to C.E.O.s'.

August 07, 2007 - U.S. Railway Electricification (TxtEdMacs). U.S. Railway Electricification, an opinion piece on the necessity of creating a working multitrack electrified railway corridor in the U.S. This is a Discussion on ways it might happen and what and whom might be the drivers.
