Open Source and the Channel

August 21, 2007 - Open Source: Right or Wrong? (Tom Adelstein). To many the Linux operating system represents a new model of software development. Many see a new paradigm forming, which differs from traditional projects where developers work in isolation without knowledge of the the big picture. Is Linux as an example of the next model in the evolution of Information Technology. Let's see.

August 08, 2007 - Open Model of Success (Tom Adelstein). OSS This article discusses how management can development a success strategy for open source software and methodologies in the enterprise.

July 31, 2007 - White Paper: Open Source Strategy (Tom Adelstein). If you have searched the Internet looking for a simple white paper on the value of Open Source, then you know the frustrations involved. In this article you will find information on building an Open Source white paper with examples and direction. An Open Source white paper provides generic, garden variety information for those whose eyes glaze over at the mention of the subject.Provide simple information needed in the marker and establish yourself as an authtority that sets you apart from your competition.

July 17, 2007 - Business Today: Open Source Assessments Requested by the Board of Directors (Tom Adelstein). To sell a new concept to an enterprise calls for buy-in from top management. IBM knew that back in the year 2000 and said so when it told the world it would not sell Linux on its computers. That announcement, created a ground swell at IBM. Management learned that about 50 percent of their employees already used Linux. So, IBM's management made a u-turn and announced a series of Linux initiatives. Upper management at IBM considered Linux a tough sell.

July 17, 2007 - Adelstein: Can You Make a Million With Linux? (Tom Adelstein). By now you've witnessed firsthand the march of the penguins -- the growing number of Linux servers in corporate shops. Linux, and the open source movement it inspired, has become so popular that you'd be hard pressed to find a Fortune 2000 company that isn't using it in some capacity.

July 03, 2007 - Find Your Open Source Niche (Tom Adelstein). Open Source software comes in different flavors; some require significant expertise in UNIX/Linux support and others work right out of the box. If the software your customers want takes more expertise than you have on staff, then you'll need to consider the risks versus the rewards of entering the Open Source business.

August 28, 2007 - Using a Source Control System (H. Cohen). This time a less generic description is given of common commands that control our use of version control. We approach the commit stage where if successful we have replaced the latest versions with our working copy.

August 21, 2007 - Selecting a Source Control System (H. Cohen). Our primary action is selecting and beginning to use a reliable source (version) control system to enhance our site's reliability. While I made a specific choice I made an attempt to keep the process description generic. Another in the series: 'How To: Coding HTML & CSS Files by Hand'.

August 14, 2007 - Browser Compatibility Issues - Safari 2.0 - II (H. Cohen). Solutions to previously encountered browser site rendering problems are presented. Began with Safari, however, also includes Firefox and IE issues. Another in 'How To: Coding HTML & CSS Files by Hand' series.

August 07, 2007 - Browser Compatibility Issues - Safari 2.0 (H. Cohen). Two related Safari 2.0 browser compatibility issues are examined. Extreme left border padding was absent, but now can be corrected by using a full one percent value. The second was absent padding on both sides of a front page band, an asymetric change was not completely satisfactory.

July 31, 2007 - Structure Web Pages with DIV Tags IV (H. Cohen). Div tags enclosing images contains an incompressible core, hence, it has to be placed judiciously. We discuss the problems I encountered stressing my mistakes and solutions. Effort is made to sentitize the reader to pick up hints of cascading style sheet failures, because in most instances that's all they will get.

July 24, 2007 - Structure Web Pages with DIV Tags III (H. Cohen). This time we add a new region, the footer that is subdivided into three regions that are customized. We again see several instances where the Safari browser seemingly ignores css file settings using percentage values. So far no fix or work around found.

July 17, 2007 - Structure Web Pages with DIV Tags II (H. Cohen). This time we look at a bit more complexity where we introduce a vertically arrayed set of resizable, colored band within the central column covering the major portion of the home web page. Code for both the html and css file is exhibited. Details of each are touched upon.

Energy & Engineering

July 31, 2007 - Electricity Generation - Missing Products: Gas Turbines: Small to Micro Sizes - V (TxtEdMacs). We push the speculation further, perhaps beyond reasonable limit. How about light weight air foil fans and externally mounted generators that use the maximum of composite materials? Coupled to a tower design to extract a high fraction of liquid water from the heated, waste air stream.

July 24, 2007 - Electricity Generation - Missing Products: Gas Turbines: Small to Micro Sizes - IV (TxtEdMacs). This time we investigate the possibility of coupling vertically aligned air foils to generate electricity from the power expended in water cooling type towers. In addition, we touch upon how water resource recovery could be part of the scheme.

July 17, 2007 - Electricity Generation - Missing Products: Gas Turbines: Small to Micro Sizes - III (TxtEdMacs). Electricity Storage, not an easy task, but it can be done in a variety of ways if we think energy content, not just electricity.

July 10, 2007 - Electricity Generation - Missing Products: Gas Turbines: Small to Micro Sizes - II (TxtEdMacs). The need and utility of small gas turbines combined with methane generated from waste flows is discussed. The citations support my assertion that this combination can be an economic sucess now. Focus is on the better methods for the urban model, e.g. continous process, heated and expelled waste treatment as part of the process. The latter is hinted at but not fully covered.

July 03, 2007 - Electricity Generation - Missing Products: Gas Turbines: Small to Micro Sizes - I (TxtEdMacs). Locally generated and distributed power that can supplement the grid is needed even in advanced nations. Focus is on the latter, while the author sees much more universal applicability. Consider this the first pass on a vast topical discussion.
